Leaving the Army means shifting your mission. Your main objective now? Protecting your family’s future.

To lock down their security, you can't just rely on standard transition briefs. You need a tactical wealth strategy that combines your military benefits with smart private assets.

Here is your 5-step checklist to secure the perimeter:

  • The SBP vs. Private Insurance Recon: The Army’s Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) takes $6.5\%$ of your pension to protect your spouse. The pivot: If you are in good health, a private life insurance policy can often give your family a much bigger payout for less monthly cost. Check both options before locking it in.

  • The SGLI/VGLI Safety Net: Your SGLI drops 120 days after your exit. You have 240 days to convert to VGLI with zero medical exams. The strategy: Use VGLI as a guaranteed fallback if you have heavy service-connected injuries, but shop private insurance first to secure lower, fixed rates.

  • Build a "Bridge Fund" for Cash Flow Ops: The gap between your final active-duty check and civilian corporate pay can be a grind. Build a high-yield "bridge account" to fund your relocation, corporate gear, or business startup costs so you never have to raid your TSP or retirement accounts early.

  • Deploy a Solo 401(k) for Business Startups: Planning to consult, contract, or launch your own veteran-owned business? Setting up a Solo 401(k) or SEP-IRA lets you shield massive chunks of your business revenue from taxes while aggressively accelerating your retirement timeline.

  • Secure Your Business with a Buy-Sell Plan: If you are partnering with fellow veterans to start a company, you need a contingency plan. A Buy-Sell Agreement funded by life insurance ensures that if a partner passes away, the payout buys out their share seamlessly—keeping the company running and ensuring their family is taken care of.

💡 The Bottom Line: The military always has a backup plan for logistics and personnel. Your family deserves that same level of tactical protection for their financial future.
